Ultra-processed food consumption triples in Spain sparking major health concerns
With nearly a third of daily calories now coming from ultra-processed foods, health experts say it´s “like smoking” and urge stronger policies to protect public health
Spain’s diet is changing fast… and not for the better. Recent reports highlight that the amount of ultra-processed foods people in Spain consume has almost tripled since the 1990s. Experts warn that these foods, which include snacks, sugary drinks, and ready-meals, are increasingly replacing fresh, wholesome foods. They are becoming “the new smoking” and is dangerous for our health and that of future generations.The scale of this issue is alarming. Once accounting for just 11% of calorie intake in the 1990s, ultra-processed foods can now contribute to around 32% of a Spaniard´s daily calories. And it’s not just Spain; in the UK, about half of all the calories the average person eats come from ultra-processed foods. “The rise of ultra-processed products is eroding traditional food cultures and contributing to the increase in chronic diseases,” warns Scientist Renata Bertazzi from the University of Salamanca.
She explains that ultra-processed foods are “formulations of substances derived from cheap foods and additives, designed and marketed to replace whole foods,” primarily to increase profits for the food industry rather than to provide nutritional value.
Professor Maira Bes-Rastrollo of the University of Navarra adds: “The scientific evidence of this research certifies that ultra-processed foods are modifying the way we eat and affecting the health of the population.” These products are linked to numerous diseases, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular conditions, depression, kidney disease, and an increased risk of premature death.
What’s most worrying is how these foods are designed: full of cheap ingredients, additives, and artificial flavourings, all marketed as quick and easy solutions for busy lives. As one researcher put it, “They are designed and marketed to replace whole foods, primarily to boost profits for the food industry.”
The experts say this trend is driven by industry marketing and lack of regulation. They’re calling for stronger action, including clear labelling, restrictions on advertising, particularly to children. Taxation on ultra-processed foods could also support increased access to fresh produce for low-income families.
“Public health depends on our ability to rein in these products and encourage eating real, minimally processed foods,” insists Maira Bes-Rastrollo from the University of Navarra.
Adding to the challenge is the aggressive role of large corporations like Nestlé and Coca-Cola, which dominate the market. These companies use vast resources to lobby against effective regulation, influencing politics and public opinion globally. The situation is being likened to the tobacco industry at its peak in terms of public health impact.
As this crisis deepens, governments worldwide are being urged to step up. Without firm policies, the reliance on junk food will continue to rise, making the health battle even harder. Experts agree that lowering ultra-processed food consumption is crucial and will require strong political will, industry accountability, and a return to healthier, minimally processed dietary habits. It’s a wake-up call at a time when many of us need clearer, healthier choices - before it’s too late.
