Andalucía's first 'Green MOT' vehicle inspection station will reduce journeys and support electric vehicles
The energy efficient facility is to be built in La Línea de la Concepción, one of the area’s busiest areas for vehicle inspections
Andalucía’s regional government has agreed to build its first “sustainable” vehicle inspection station, known as the “ITV Verde” (Green MOT), which will be located in La Línea de la Concepción (Cádiz).
The initiative is aligned with the goals set out in the Andalucían “Energy Strategy 2030” and “Air Quality Strategy”, which promote emission reduction, energy efficiency and improved air quality.
The regional government says this “innovative concept” will combine services for conventional vehicles with the capacity to carry out specific inspections for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.
This new testing centre will meet “the highest standards” of “energy efficiency and renewable energy use”, incorporating “high-efficiency lighting, climate control and machinery systems powered by photovoltaic solar energy”.
It will also include “charging infrastructure for electric vehicles” and “optimised inspection lines” to reduce energy consumption and improve operational performance.
The Campo de Gibraltar area is one of the busiest areas of Andalucía for vehicle inspections, with over 109,000 inspections per year.
The new ITV Verde will reduce the need for local users to travel to the existing stations in Algeciras or Estepona (Málaga), cutting an estimated 1.4 million kilometres of annual return journeys.
According to the regional government, in 2024 alone, more than 24,000 vehicles from La Línea were inspected, making it the municipality with the second-highest demand in the Campo de Gibraltar, behind Algeciras, which carried out more than 45,000 inspections.
With a projected capacity of 40,000 initial inspections per year, it will also “improve service coverage” in the region while “reducing emissions linked to transport” and supporting the “development of low-emission zones”.
The ITV Verde in La Línea de la Concepción will mark the beginning of a “network of sustainable facilities” in the region that combine technological innovation, environmental efficiency and public service.
The regional Department of Industry, Energy and Mines will build and commission the centre through the public company Verificaciones Industriales SA (Veiasa).
