September 27 Free guided tour of the fishing traditions of Águilas
The perfect way to work up an appetite for a plate or two of seafood tapas in Águilas!
In order to mark World Tourism Day on 27th September this free guided tour is being held in the town of Águilas, in the south-west of the Region of Murcia on the boundary with the Andalucía province of Almería, beginning at the Puerto de Poniente at 11.00.
The theme of the visit is the history of the fishing sector in Águilas, one of the most important elements of the local economy today as it has been for hundreds of years. Among the stops are some of the natural mooring points which the varied coastline and three main bays of Águilas offer, and the Puerto de Poniente is representative of nature’s bounty in providing a haven protected from easterly winds.
Similarly, the Puerto de Levante affords protection against westerlies, and in times gone by there was a simple Stone jetty used by the fishermen who cemented the relationship of Águilas with the sea in the town’s identity.
Your expert guide and the information panels along the route help you follow the roots of the fishing traditions in Águilas, and although registration for the tour is free of charge it would be an unusual participant who fails to indulge in a plate or two of fish and seafood tapas after it ends!
Registration is available online here and all are welcome!

Águilas boasts 28 kilometres of coastline, with many fine, sandy beaches, sheltered coves and unspoilt natural beaches. It is a great summer favourite with Spanish holidaymakers, so always has a superb programme of concerts and activities throughout the summer, as well as the biggest carnival in the Region of Murcia, 40 days before Semana Santa (Easter.)
Throughout the year it also has a number of museums and historical attractions, a castle with fabulous views overlooking the bay and several other points of interest, all of which make it an good place to visit for days out. Throughout the year the tourist office runs monthly guided tours and the route of the railways, which explores the railway history of the town.
The tourist information office is located in the Plaza de Antonio Cortijos, just a short walk from the sea front and Plaza de España, a cool, shaded space in which to enjoy a coffee.
