Málaga's latest food craze looks exactly like an ice cream but it's actually sushi
A New York street food trend has just landed in the heart of the city, and it's as fun to eat as it looks
Málaga is no stranger to a food trend, but this one might just be the most eye-catching to arrive in the city in a while. A new spot has opened in the historic centre selling sushi that looks, at first glance, almost identical to a push-up ice lolly. It's called a sushi pop, it originated in New York, and it's already causing something of a stir.
The concept is straightforward and genuinely clever. Instead of the usual plate of nigiri or a roll to eat with chopsticks, the sushi is packed into a cylindrical tube. Push it up from the bottom and take bites as it rises, working through the layers of rice, fish and fillings as you go. No chopstick skills required, no plate needed, no table necessary. The whole idea is that you walk around and eat it, which makes it perfect for a city like Málaga where wandering the streets with something delicious in hand is practically a way of life.The brand behind it is called Sushi Bom, inspired by the New York restaurants that brought the format to life, and it describes itself as "a different sushi eating experience." The Málaga outpost has just opened at number 3 Calle Echegaray, a short stroll from the Cathedral and the Teatro Echegaray, right in the thick of things.
There are eight varieties to choose from, ranging from the California Classic with surimi, avocado and Philadelphia cheese, to the more adventurous Sakura Bom, which combines sautéed salmon with strawberry, grated coconut and syrup. The Rainbow Bom packs seven different flavours into a single tube for those who simply can't decide.
Prices run from €9.90 to €12.90 depending on what you go for, and the sushi can be paired with a soft drink or a natural orange juice served inside the fruit itself.
Early visitors have been enthusiastic. "Amazing, it's super convenient, the salmon is fresh and they make everything at the moment," said one local food fan on TikTok, filming herself working her way through a tube.
The place is open every day from 1.00pm to 10.00pm. Worth a look, even if only to see the reaction of anyone who mistakes it for dessert.
