March 20 to 22 Visit a Spanish navy patrol ship in Puerto de Mazarrón!
Special 30-minute trips out into the Bay of Mazarrón on 21st March!
Puerto de Mazarrón is currently enjoying its annual fiestas in honour of San José, whose saint’s day on 19th March is a regional holiday in Murcia, and over the weekend following the big day there is an opportunity to visit the Spanish navy patrol boat “Formentor” in the port itself.
The “Formentor” is set to dock in the fishing port of Puerto de Mazarrón on Friday 20th March at 13.00, remaining in this part of the Costa Cálida until Sunday at 13.00. While it is there the vessel is opening its doors to the public free of charge and without prior bookings. The timetable is the following, with average visits expected to last 10 minutes or so:
Friday March 20 – 16.00 to 18.15
Saturday March 21 - 16.00 to 18.15
Sunday March 22 – 9.30 to 12.00
In addition, on Friday 20th March the Spanish flag will be raised on board at precisely 19.17, and those wishing to attend are advised to arrive at least 15 minutes beforehand.
A further attraction is that special “sea baptisms” are being held, with a series of 15-minute trips setting sail at 9.00, 9.45, 11.00, 11.45 and 12.30. For these excursions reservations are required by telephone on 660 752470 by Friday. Each person may reserve only two places and a minimum age of 8 is stipulated.
The Formentor was delivered to the Navy in 1987 and is used in the protection of the Economic Exclusion Zone along with the “Toralla”, while a further 5 ships were commissioned by the Spanish customs service. The hull is made from wood covered in glass-reinforced plastic and the Toralla and the Formentor are the only two of their kind currently in service with the Navy.
