Property in Los Urrutias and Estrella de Mar
Modern developments stand alongside the older town centre of Los Urrutias
The town of Los Urrutias, on the western shore of the Mar Menor, grew into a popular summer destination for residents of the cities of Murcia and Cartagena and further afield in Spain in the second half of the 20th century, and much of the residential property in the area still dates from this period. Along the seafront almost all of the buildings are low-rise, with a couple of apartment blocks consisting of three storeys but nothing else other than the church, the palm trees and the old windmills further inland rising far above the skyline.
However, on the inland side of the main RM-F54 road there are some newer property developments where Los Urrutias has grown in more recent years, and these have generally attracted more interest from non-Spanish buyers. Unfortunately some of the newer properties fell victim to the bursting of the property bubble after the boom of the first years of the new millennium, and as a result a few of completed homes stand alongside others which are still best described as work in progress: however, this does not appear to have diminished the attraction of Los Urrutias as a location.
These newer properties are generally comfortably sized chalets, and although they are outside the town centre they are within a couple of minutes’ walk from the shops and other amenities of Los Urrutias. These include various small shops, bars and restaurants, a social centre, a small medical centre and the marina, while for a full range of facilities the city of Cartagena is just twenty minutes away by car.
Further afield, the Estrella de Mar development around half a kilometre south of Los Urrutias is also popular among non-Spanish buyers. Next to it is another development called La Perla featuring very modern designs of apartment, but this project has only been partially constructed.
Due to its proximity to La Manga and the two seas of the Costa Cálida (the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean), Los Urrutias is in an enviable location, and for this reason will continue to attract interest from those searching for a home in the sun in the Region of Murcia.
