Scared and grounded: Guardia Civil rescues a young griffon vulture in Mula
A vigilant neighbour’s call leads to a hopeful rescue for a struggling bird in Murcia
A young griffon vulture left stranded and unable to fly was rescued in the Casas Nuevas area of Mula thanks to a concerned neighbour’s quick action. The woman noticed the bird on her property looking weak and unable to get airborne again, and alerted the Guardia Civil’s Nature Protection Service (Seprona).Officers arrived to find the 7-kilogram bird in a precarious state and carefully took it to the El Valle de Murcia Wildlife Recovery Centre. There, veterinary experts are now working to nurse the vulture back to health.
While not endangered in Spain, the griffon vulture has been a species of special interest since 1990 due to its important role in nature and cultural heritage. Young birds like this often face challenges learning to fend for themselves, so rescues and rehabilitation are vital to their survival and eventual return to the wild.
This heartwarming rescue is a wonderful reminder of how everyday people and dedicated wildlife officers can come together to protect the region’s natural treasures, giving these majestic birds a fighting chance. We all hope to see this young vulture soaring the skies again soon.
