Get paid to recycle: Spain is finally introducing its long-awaited deposit return scheme
The new deposit and return scheme for drinks cans and plastic bottles will be rolled out across Spain in November
Spain is finally catching up with much of Europe by introducing a deposit return scheme for drinks containers, and not before time. From November 2026, every bottle of water, fizzy drink, juice, beer or other packaged beverage up to three litres will carry a deposit of at least 10 cents on top of the purchase price. Return the empty container to the shop or a collection machine, and you get your money back.
The reason Spain has been pushed into this is that it missed European packaging collection targets back in 2023. Under Spanish law, that triggered a two-year countdown to get a deposit return system up and running, and November is when that clock runs out.
Right now, only around 40% of all drinks containers in Spain are recycled, which means more than half of all plastic bottles, cans and cartons end up in landfill, incinerators or littering the environment.
The EU wants that figure at at least 90% and countries like Germany, Norway and the Netherlands are already hitting those numbers thanks to exactly this kind of scheme.
The 10 cent deposit will appear on your receipt when you buy a drink and you'll get it back in full when you drop off the empty. With the cost of living still squeezing household budgets, those cents can add up quickly, especially for families. It's also a brilliant way to get kids involved in recycling as a way of earning a bit of pocket money while learning why it matters.
The scheme covers plastic bottles, aluminium cans and cartons up to three litres. Glass returnables and non-drink containers like yogurt pots or sauce bottles are excluded, at least for now.
There are, however, some real questions about whether everything will be ready in time. Who exactly will manage the system nationally still hasn't been confirmed and hundreds of thousands of retailers across Spain are still waiting on the technical and regulatory guidance they need to get set up.
Those in the industry have acknowledged the November deadline is going to be tight, but the law is the law and the change is coming regardless.
